Did you know your smart phone uses less energy when it’s cold?
Researchers at Tufts University found a 20% difference in energy consumption and performance of smartphones of the same model. When they looked into why, they found that the colder the environment, the greater the efficiency.
In fact, putting a smartphone into a refrigerator can improve efficiency by up to 60 percent, the researchers said.
Smartphones have built-in thermal devices but do a poor job of regulating their own temperatures, the researchers said, so some of them reach their heat limit within 10 seconds—and then their performance slows.
Other research, however, shows that the batteries in smart phones exposed to extreme cold will lose their capacity. Charging a phone in below-freezing temperatures can permanently damage its battery, according to Battery University, which specializes in battery research.
Apple recommends that iPhones will perform their best in temperatures between 32 and 95 degrees.
